What to expect on your caving trip to the Grotte de Coinans
Discover caving in the Grotte de Coinans (or Grotte de l’Assassin) near Saint-Claude, in the heart of the Jura Mountains. This cave system stretches for just over 300 metres and features various chambers as well as vertical and underwater passages, making it an ideal spot for an adventurous caving trip in the Jura.
As you make your way through the cave, you’ll reach the various chambers and galleries by abseiling down small shafts. On the way back, you can also take a dip in a small underground lake.
On day trips, the adventure continues further into the cave. After passing through a narrow passage, you’ll need to cross a small underground stream to reach the spectacular ‘salle des gours’, an area covered in stalactites and stalagmites where the water has formed small natural limestone pools.

The Grotte de l’Assassin is located in the immediate vicinity of Saint-Claude, Les Rousses, Lake Vouglans and Clairvaux-les-Lacs. The journey from Geneva, Lausanne, the Pays de Gex, Lyon or Dijon takes between 1½ and 2 hours by car.

No, the Grotte de l’Assassin in Coinans is very versatile and has something for everyone. To make the most of it, opt for the day trip. However, if you’re looking for a more challenging caving experience, you can visit the Gouffre du Haut Crêt.
How long should I allow for this?
Allow 3 hours for a half-day trip and 5½ hours for a full-day trip.
Where is the Coinans Cave?
The Grotte de Coinans is located in Lavans-Lès-Saint-Claude, in the Jura region, 40 minutes from Clairvaux-les-Lacs and the resort of Les Rousses. It takes about an hour’s drive from Geneva or the Pays de Gex.
Is abseiling compulsory?
Yes, to make your way to the back of the cave, you’ll need to abseil down.
I wear glasses – can I take part?
Of course! Make sure you bring a cord. Your guide will explain how to keep them from getting lost or damaged. Ideally, bring an old pair. Better still, wear contact lenses if you can.
What if the weather is bad?
The guide may change the itinerary. If the activity cannot go ahead, we will reschedule it for another day. If this is not possible, we will cancel it. In that case, you will receive a full refund.
